Over the past three years, the scale of China's medical device industry has continued to grow at a rapid pace due to the impact of the New Crown Pneumonia epidemic. 2022 saw the number of domestic medical device manufacturing enterprises break through 30,000 and the number of operating enterprises also break through 1.1 million, contributing to the booming development of the entire medical device industry.

In the ongoing fight against the new crown pneumonia epidemic, the global demand for medical device products was strong, and the overall scale of China's medical device imports and exports rose a notch compared to the pre-epidemic period, firmly placing it as the second largest medical device market in the world.

According to statistics, from January to November 2022, China's total medical device exports reached RMB444.179 billion, with an average annual compound growth rate of 10.2%, much higher than the growth rate of China's total import and export trade of all products and GDP during the same period.

Among the major categories of commodities exported by China's medical devices during January-November 2022, the medical consumables category had the largest export value, totalling 251.369 billion yuan, followed by medical equipment and IVD reagents.

Among the key commodities of each medical device, protective masks had the highest export value and trade surplus, followed by test strips and masks, etc. Other items such as PVC gloves, rubber gloves, cotton, gauze, bandages and medical protective clothing also ranked high.

China's medical device industry is entering a golden decade. With the continuous adjustment of industrial policies and the implementation of the "One Belt, One Road" strategy, domestic medical device enterprises are accelerating their global layout and participating in international competition, and more Chinese enterprises are "going out".

Currently, the development mode of medical device enterprises is changing from marketing-driven to innovation-driven, and the competition dimension will be expanded comprehensively. Whether we can further promote digital transformation and bring into play the value of data as a strategic resource will play a key role in the future industry competition, and medical device enterprises will also face an unprecedented competition pattern.
